The Power of Entertainment:

Elevating Events with Professional Talent

Entertainment plays a critical role in setting the tone and energy of any event. Whether it’s a wedding, corporate gathering, school prom, or private celebration, the right entertainment transforms an ordinary occasion into an unforgettable experience. Music, lighting, emceeing, and interaction with guests are not just background elements—they are the pulse that keeps your event alive and engaging. When done right, entertainment creates lasting memories and brings people together in the best way possible.

Hiring a professional entertainment company ensures that every detail is handled with precision and care. Experienced entertainers know how to read a crowd, adapt to the atmosphere, and maintain smooth transitions throughout the event. They come prepared with quality equipment, customized playlists, and backup plans—so clients can relax and enjoy themselves without worrying about technical glitches or awkward silences. A good entertainment company adds polish and professionalism that sets an event apart from the rest.

Beyond technical expertise, professional entertainers bring a unique ability to engage audiences. DJs, emcees, and performers who genuinely connect with guests help to create a sense of unity and excitement. This is especially valuable for events where people may not know each other well, such as company parties or large weddings. A well-timed song or the right lighting effect can shift the energy of the entire room, breaking the ice and encouraging participation.

Choosing the right entertainment provider also adds value by saving time and reducing stress during the planning process. Trusted companies can offer guidance, suggest timelines, and work seamlessly with other vendors to ensure everything runs smoothly. Instead of juggling multiple responsibilities, hosts can focus on enjoying the moment, knowing their entertainment is in good hands.

If you're planning an event and want to make it truly special, don't leave the entertainment to chance. Let The DJ Guy bring your vision to life with professional sound, lighting, photo booths and unforgettable energy. Contact The DJ Guy today and find out how the right entertainment can take your event to the next level!

Making Your Event Stand Out

Add To Your Theming with Colorful Up Lighting!

Up lighting is one of the most effective ways to transform a venue and enhance the overall ambiance of an event. By strategically placing lights along walls, columns, or architectural features, you can create a dramatic and elegant atmosphere that elevates the space. Unlike harsh overhead lighting, up lighting adds warmth and depth, allowing you to highlight key areas of the venue and create a visually stunning environment. Whether you're hosting a wedding, corporate event, or private party, the right lighting can turn an ordinary space into something extraordinary.

Beyond just improving the look of a venue, up lighting plays a crucial role in reinforcing the theme of your event. With a variety of colors to choose from, you can customize the lighting to match your wedding colors, company branding, or holiday theme. Soft amber tones can create a romantic and intimate feel, while bold blues, purples, or reds can add a vibrant, energetic touch. For themed events, such as a Gatsby-inspired gala or a winter wonderland party, up lighting can immerse guests in the experience, making the setting more cohesive and memorable.

One of the greatest advantages of up lighting is its versatility. It works beautifully in ballrooms, banquet halls, barns, and even outdoor tents. In indoor venues, it can enhance architectural details, draw attention to focal points like a sweetheart table or stage, and provide an elegant backdrop for photos. For outdoor events, up lighting can be used to illuminate tent ceilings, highlight trees, or create a glowing perimeter around the space, ensuring a magical ambiance even after the sun goes down. With wireless and battery-operated options available, up lighting can be placed virtually anywhere without the hassle of running cords or finding power sources.

In addition to up lighting, monogram projection is another fantastic way to personalize and elevate the look of your event. Using a high-powered projector, we can display a custom monogram featuring a couple’s names and wedding date, a company’s logo, or any unique design onto the dance floor, ceiling, or wall. This elegant touch not only enhances the décor but also serves as a stunning focal point that guests will admire throughout the night. Whether you want a romantic script for a wedding or a sleek, professional look for a corporate event, monogram projection adds a sophisticated and memorable element to your celebration.

At The DJ Guy, we offer professional up lighting services to enhance your event, whether it’s in an indoor venue or a tented outdoor setting. Our high-quality LED up lights can be customized to match your theme, creating a breathtaking effect that complements your décor. With over 25 years of experience in the entertainment industry, we know how to use lighting to make your event stand out. Creating the Ultimate Wedding Playlist

A Guide to an Unforgettable Celebration

Music is one of the most important elements of a wedding reception, setting the tone for the evening and keeping guests entertained. A well-curated playlist ensures the night flows smoothly, from the first dance to the last song of the evening. Whether you're working with a DJ or crafting a playlist yourself, here’s how to create the ultimate wedding playlist for a celebration your guests will never forget.

1. Start with the Key Moments

Your wedding day will be filled with unforgettable moments, each deserving of the perfect soundtrack. Be sure to select songs for:

  • Grand Entrance – Set the energy right from the start with an exciting, upbeat song.
  • First Dance – Choose a song that reflects your love story.
  • Parent Dances – Pick meaningful songs that celebrate your relationship with your parents.
  • Dinner Music – Soft, background music that allows guests to converse comfortably.
  • Cake Cutting – A fun or romantic song to accompany this sweet moment.
  • Bouquet & Garter Toss (if applicable) – Something playful and lighthearted.
  • Last Dance – End the night with a song that leaves guests feeling nostalgic and joyful.

2. Mix It Up for All Ages

A great wedding playlist should have something for everyone. Your guest list likely includes friends, family, and multiple generations, so incorporating a mix of classics and current hits is key. Consider a balance of genres like:

  • Motown & Oldies – Great for older guests who love to dance.
  • Classic Rock & 80s Hits – Fun, sing-along-worthy tracks.
  • 90s & 2000s Pop & Hip-Hop – Nostalgic throwbacks for millennials.
  • Current Chart-Toppers – Songs that keep the energy high and the dance floor packed.

3. Keep the Energy Flowing

A successful wedding playlist is about more than just picking great songs—it’s about keeping the energy flowing throughout the night. A professional DJ knows how to read the crowd and adjust the music accordingly. Some key strategies include:

  • Building up energy gradually – Starting with slower songs during dinner and ramping up to high-energy dance tracks.
  • Playing crowd favorites early – Getting guests on the dance floor early ensures momentum.
  • Using remixes & mashups – A DJ can seamlessly blend songs to keep the party moving.
  • Knowing when to slow it down – A few slow songs allow couples and families to have their special moments.

4. Personalize Your Playlist

Make your wedding playlist unique by incorporating songs that have personal meaning. Whether it’s the song that played on your first date, a track that reminds you of a special vacation, or a family-favorite dance tune, these small details make your reception feel more intimate and memorable.

5. Work with a Professional DJ

While it’s tempting to rely on a pre-made playlist or a streaming service, nothing compares to the expertise of a professional wedding DJ. A skilled DJ doesn’t just play music—they create an experience by mixing tracks seamlessly, reading the crowd, and making sure every moment is perfectly timed.

2020 - The Year That Wasn't and How We Adapted

What a year 2020 has been. Not just for me, but the entire wedding industry and of course, millions of couples who had their dreams ruined by Covid-19.

2020 started out as the best year of my career. In January, I had very few open dates left through out the summer and most had booked larger packages including both DJ, photo booth and in many cases, ceremony and up lighting. I had events in January and February and even the first week of March. Rumors were swirling at that time about this new virus and I had no idea what was to come.

Suddenly, everything closed down and we were told to stay home. I began to wonder how this would affect my clients (starting in May). I went from having the biggest income in years to having nothing to support my family and pay our bills. And while my policy has always been the same (deposits/retainers are non-refundable), I did come up with a specific policy for Covid-19.

Clients began to call and I offered them the option to reschedule anytime within the next 2 years. Fortunately, most picked a date in 2021, similar to the date the had in 2020. A few opted to move to the late summer and some, fall. Of all the weddings I had scheduled, just two decided to continue without a large gathering and without entertainment. Both of them were offered credit (their original deposit) towards any future event within 3 years.

Of the few weddings that did move forward, all of them enjoyed an amazing day with those that chose to attend and zero issues that I am aware of.

As a licensed Michigan health worker, I am well-versed in the procedures and protocols to prevent the spread of this virus. We took great precaution to make our events safe, utilizing touch-free photo stations, song requests by text message, sanitizing microphones between use and limiting direct interaction with guests.

Moving forward to 2021, I'm starting the year off with a somewhat full calendar because of all the rescheduled weddings from 2020. My suggestion for those planning any event this year is to first check the policy with your vendors regarding deposits/retainers. You won't find anyone offering refunds, but they should be offering you the option to reschedule or use that money towards a future event. Keep in mind that many of us do not qualify for any sort of compensation for our lost income and if we do, it's not even a fraction of our normal income.

All this being said, I truly hope that those who have put their dreams on hold and those who have struggled to stay afloat during these times can move forward in 2021.

The DJ Guy would love to be a part of making your dream wedding a reality. Call or request a quote online and we'll be happy to video conference or meet in person if you prefer.

It's been a while and it's been a busy summer!

Some of you may be wondering... what happened to the blog posts and the venue reviews?

Well, to be honest... I've been focused on my clients and improving my offerings.  This summer has been quite busy.  Many of the venues I've done this past summer are either repeat locations that I've already reviewed or private backyard events that wouldn't really help you too much in your planning.

Not everything is old though.  I've worked with a few outstanding vendors this summer and I always want to give credit where credit is due.

I did an amazing wedding at a private campground in Dexter on 8/22/15.  While the scenery was beautiful, there were some issues with zoning and I can't comfortably recommend this location for any event.

The one thing I can say is that the caterer was AMAZING!  If you like grilled food, KING-Q BAR-B-QUE is your guy!  There were so many choices and so many items that could have been done just average, but everything in this arsenal of BBQ barnyard friends was kicked up to an amazing level.

The variety of food isn't reflected in the picture above as I would have needed THREE plates to show everything off.  Pulled pork and chicken, BBQ chicken, ribs, beef brisket, custom sausages, homemade cornbread, homemade coleslaw, mac n' cheese, southwestern veggies, mashed potatoes, grilled veggies, grilled salmon, grilled duck and I'm probably missing a dozen things.  Every bit of it was excellent.

I also had the opportunity to try something new with the lighting.  Tree lighting!

The outdoor bar was themed out very nicely.  An old antique rowboat created the bar shelf to hold bottles.  The background for photos was picture perfect as you can see from this photo (taken with my phone, believe it or not).

I'll try to get a new post up, each coming week over the next month.  While I don't have a lot of new venues to review, there's a few unique ideas and new vendors.

As always, thanks for reading and be sure to visit The DJ Guy on our website and Facebook page.

Venue Review: YOUR OWN BACKYARD (everything you need to know about outdoor events)

This week's review is more of a guide to outdoor weddings and a list of what works and what doesn't.  With that being said, I do about 20 outdoor events each year.  Some are big elaborate weddings and some are just small school functions.  The pictures are from various events.

Things to keep in mind...

A wedding reception is really a party for your guests.  While you certainly the focus of the event, you want your guests to enjoy themselves and leave saying that was one of the best events they've ever attended.

You'll want to keep weather in mind since you'll be outdoors.  If you've selected a summer date, chances are you're safe without the need for heaters.  You'll definitely want to provide cover for everyone so a tent is pretty much a requirement.  Even if it doesn't rain, it will provide a shaded area for your guests.  If you know the temperature is going to be in the 90's or hotter, you may want to consider renting some industrial sized fans to keep your guests cool.

Remember, if you're guests don't feel comfortable, that may give them reason to leave.

A good bathroom is a necessity.  If you don't want 100+ people trampling through your home, you may want to rent a porta-potty or a bathroom on wheels.  If you choose the porta-potty, be sure to get one with a sink and soap dispenser (and also a led light for night time use).

Lighting...

The sun will go down eventually and while there will be plenty of lights on the dance floor, those that aren't dancing won't want to sit in the dark.  There are many options for lighting.  Many guests line the edge of the tent with white Christmas lights (which provides a nice soft ambience, but not much brightness).  Most tents are white because it doesn't attract heat and looks clean.  That giant white canvas inside the tent is just begging for a splash of color.  That's where I can help out with up lighting.  I've even done logos and monograms, which adds a nice touch.  If you're interested in having this for your event, just ask me.  Here's some of the recent events I've done...

Power...

One of the most important things to remember is to keep your DJ on a separate circuit from heaters, air conditioner, coffee pots or anything that has a heavy power draw.  I tell this to all my outdoor clients and I cannot stress this enough.  Don't assume that it will be OK to have the DJ and the coffee pot on the same circuit.  I had an issue recently.  We knew it was an issue before the night even started because the circuit breaker kept switching off and it wasn't corrected the way I advised.  The power went out during the first dance and there was nothing I could do.

Other things to consider...

There are several types of dance floors you can rent.  Steer clear of the plastic or rubber 1x1 squares.  They aren't made for grass and don't stay together very well.  You're better off getting the 3x3 wood squares that are heavier and less likely to move.  Be sure to leave enough room for your DJ to setup inside the tent (about 4-5 feet from the edge of the tent).  The dance floor also works best in the center of the tent as opposed to being at one end and having to project sound long distance.  The image on the left is the 1x1 plastic floor, the right is the 3x3 wood floor.

Be prepared to hold the ceremony in the tent if weather related circumstances require it.  If you should need ceremony music and/or microphones, I can help with that, just ask.

Make sure you've got somewhere for all your guests to park.  Many of my outdoor weddings have been in the country so parking hasn't been a big issue.
If you have questions about anything, it's best to ask someone.  Whether it's your caterer about food related things or myself when it comes to lighting, sound and placement.  I've been doing this for 14 years and I've done a LOT of outdoor weddings in that time.  I hope this post helps you out a bit!

I'll leave you with some pictures from the grad party I did just last night.  There was a zero chance of rain so we opted to setup in the most most ideal spot for sound projection and usability of the photo booth.  This was a beautiful home in Brighton and most of the guests stayed close to the house even though they had a tent further out in the yard.

Until Next Sunday - Happy Wedding Planning!

Venue Review - Arnoldo Banquet Hall, Riverview, MI

Today's review is a bit different from the ones I've done in the past.  It's not often that I book photo booth services and not DJ services, but it happens.  When it does, I run the photo booth and give my guys the day off.  On a Friday in May, this was the case, so I headed out to the Arnaldo Banquet Hall in Riverview.

The Hall itself is very "over the top" with a circular ceiling that has twinkling stars and blue lighting to the fountain and faux marble columns that line the lobby area.  They must have spent a fortune on the 12 HDTVs behind the bar, but then decided they would look better if they were behind a waterfall that runs over a plexiglass window, placed in front of them.

On this occasion, I did not get the chance to eat.  But don't worry... this isn't my first time here.  I was here about 5 years ago for my high school reunion and the food was nothing to write home about (I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars).

I was also looking forward to this for one other reason... I can sit back and take in what another DJ is doing.

I made a list of all the pros and cons of this particular DJ.  While the setup is clean and professional looking, there isn't much else that I can add to the list of pros!

This room has the unfortunate layout that forces the DJ to the far corner of the room, with tables placed directly between the DJ and the dance floor.  I've stated in the past how this is completely inappropriate and creates an impossible situation for any DJ to overcome.  Guests should NEVER be seated in front of speakers and lighting the dance also becomes a challenge.

Lucky for this DJ, she only had one light to begin with.  That's right - ONE LIGHT for the entire dance floor!  You'll notice it's sitting on the table instead of being up in the air, where it can be angled down, over the tables and actually hit the dance floor.  I've seen DJs that only use a few lights in the past and for some reason, they think that putting them on the table is acceptable (it's not, it's quite amateur).

She has a lovely twinkling LED backdrop that sells for no less than $400.  Aren't you glad she spent money on a backdrop instead of lighting the dance floor?  She's obviously trying to draw attention to herself.  But if that's the case, she should be standing and not sitting the entire night.  There's a reason for that too...

After hearing her dinner music, which was a compilation of "weddings greatest hits" (including Love Shack, Old Time Rock & Roll, White Wedding, Baby Got Back and MORE!), I was curious to take a closer look.  She was using a desktop computer with WINDOWS "FREAKING" MEDIA PLAYER!!!!  No DJ software, no controller, just a keyboard and mouse.  This explains why NONE of the songs were ever mixed together, why sometimes there was 5-6 seconds of silence between songs and why some songs seemed to suddenly get cut off and another one started abruptly.

"DJ Trainwreck" also managed to fumble through introductions without welcoming guests and getting them seated and forgot to cue the song for the bride & groom's intro!

THIS is what the fabulously low price of $499 will get you for your wedding!  If that's what you want, you could probably just hire a friend to do it with their ipod and they might even do a better job.  People like this give professional DJs a bad reputation and I just want to let everyone know that there ARE professionals like myself that will exceed your expectations - EVERY TIME!

At least one thing went right for this couple... they had a great photo booth that everyone enjoyed and memory scrapbook they can look through for years to come.

(end)

The 2012 Wedding Season Begins!

Last Saturday was the start of the 2012 wedding season for me.  Lenny and Beth Cusenza had their reception at Kellogg Center in Lansing, MI.  Their colors were green and white (MSU colors) and I lit the walls of the room with up lighting and projected an image of a bride and groom on the dance floor.

Lenny is the owner of How Sweet It Is, a chocolate company (http://www.sweetfudge.com/).  Needless to say, there were plenty of delicious candies and chocolates the entire night.

The food was great (as it always is at Kellogg Center), the guests had a blast and it was a great way to start of the wedding season.

Lighting sets the mood...

I mentioned last week that I had added some new lighting and I promised some video from an actual event.  Well, here it is.  This was taken at Crystal Gardens last Saturday.  As you can see, the new lights are much more vibrant an the effects are great!

Is Your DJ "Livin On A Prayer"???

Chances are, if you've been to a wedding recently and the DJ was using CDs or even worse: RECORDS, it's because he or she just doesn't care about their clients, it's all about the money for them.  It's sad to say, but far too many DJs don't invest in their own business.  Over time, equipment becomes outdated, damaged and worn out.  If it isn't replaced, there's a good chance it could stop working or act up at your event!

The DJ Guy is CONSTANTLY upgrading, adding and improving equipment.  Just this week we made the switch to ALL LED lighting!  The final lights (our colored flood lights) were replaced with LEDs.  They're more energy efficient, the colors are more vibrant, there are more colors and LEDs don't burn out like regular light bulbs.  This also allowed a smaller, less obtrusive lighting setup.  The entire lighting system is also wireless as well, so we can plug in anywhere there's power and turn various effects on and off from the other side of the room.

While it may not look like much, the effect is really incredible for the size.  Below are two short sample videos.  The first with just the lights hitting the wall, the second is with fog for effect.

I've had couples ask what type of lights I use in the past and what they look like.  I'll post some event video in the weeks to come so that everyone can see what they look like in a wedding reception setting.
